Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6,187 m) earned its name from the British explorers who first sighted it rising like an island from a sea of glaciers. Located in the Khumbu close to Everest Base Camp, it is Nepal's most popular trekking peak — but it is a genuine mountaineering objective requiring crampons, ice axe, and fixed-line technique. - Permits: Climbing permit from NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association) or DoT (Department of Tourism), plus applicable park permits — all arranged by TempleFront.
- Previous crampon use experience is essential.
- Island Peak summits at 6,187 m. Acute mountain sickness is a real risk above 4,000 m; the itinerary includes acclimatisation days at Namche and Dingboche, and your guide carries a pulse oximeter and first-aid kit.
- Best seasons: Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November).
- Comprehensive travel insurance including emergency helicopter evacuation is strongly recommended — submit policy details before departure.
- Book 2–3 months ahead for peak seasons; spring fills quickly.

Do I need prior climbing experience?
Previous crampon use experience is essential — Island Peak is a genuine technical objective despite its trekking peak classification. Training is provided at base camp, but arriving already comfortable with crampons significantly improves your summit day. Strong trekking fitness and prior high-altitude trekking (above 4,000 m) is also recommended.
How technical is Island Peak?
The route involves a steep headwall and a fixed-rope summit ridge with significant exposure. Crampon, ice axe, and ascender technique are required. It is not a walk-up peak, but the difficulty is well within the reach of a fit trekker with basic training. The technical section is well-fixed and guided throughout.
Can I combine Island Peak with Everest Base Camp?
Absolutely — Island Peak is located in the Khumbu close to EBC, and many climbers combine the two on a single trip. Our itinerary already includes a side trip to Gorak Shep during the approach. If you want a dedicated EBC + Island Peak combination itinerary, contact us and we will build it for your group.
What gear do I need?
Crampons, ice axe, harness, ascender, and helmet. All can be rented in Namche Bazaar or Kathmandu. A full gear list is provided after booking. TempleFront supplies group technical equipment including ropes and anchors.
Is insurance required?
Comprehensive travel insurance including helicopter evacuation is strongly recommended for all Island Peak climbers. At 6,187 m in the Khumbu, emergency extraction requires a helicopter.
How far in advance should I book?
Island Peak is Nepal's most popular trekking peak and Sagarmatha permits are in demand. We recommend booking 2–3 months in advance for peak seasons.
