Lobuche East (6,119 m) is a spectacular introductory expedition in the heart of the Khumbu. The base camp at 5,500 m looks out over Tawache and Ama Dablam, and the route winds below glaciers to the Lobuche and Khumbu glaciers before reaching the summit with an unobstructed panorama of the world's greatest peaks. A climbing course is offered at the start — no previous technical experience required, but strong fitness is essential.

Do I need any prior climbing experience?
No previous technical climbing experience is required — a pre-climb course at base camp covers crampon use, ice axe technique, and fixed-line ascending before your summit day. However, strong physical fitness and experience trekking at altitude (above 4,500 m) are essential.
What is included in the pre-climb course?
At Lobuche East Base Camp (5,500 m), your guide runs a half-day technical clinic covering: crampon fitting and walking technique, ice axe arrest positions, clipping and ascending a fixed rope, and safe self-rescue basics. This is included in the expedition price and is mandatory for all climbers.
How does Lobuche East compare to Island Peak?
Both are popular introductory trekking peaks in the Khumbu at similar altitudes (Lobuche East 6,119 m vs Island Peak 6,187 m). Lobuche East is slightly less crowded and offers arguably better base camp views — directly overlooking Tawache and Ama Dablam. The route is more of a mixed snow and rock ridge; Island Peak's headwall is somewhat more direct. Both are excellent first Himalayan objectives.
What gear do I need?
Crampons, ice axe, harness, ascender, and helmet. All can be rented in Namche Bazaar or Kathmandu. A full gear list is provided after booking. TempleFront supplies group technical equipment (ropes, anchors, pickets).
Is insurance required?
Comprehensive travel insurance including helicopter evacuation is strongly recommended. At 6,119 m in a remote Khumbu location, emergency extraction requires a helicopter.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend 2–3 months in advance for peak seasons (April–May and October–November). Last-minute availability may exist — contact us to check.
